The Environmental Engineer is responsible for providing guidance to Paper Mill Operations ensuring environmental compliance is maintained by preventing pollution from a large, fully-integrated Kraft pulp mill.
How you will impact WestRock:
The Environmental Engineer will be required to perform any of the following work functions:
Coordinate sampling, reporting and training associated with regulatory permits (NPDES process wastewater, storm water, water withdrawal, groundwater monitoring).
Manage waste programs including solid, hazardous, universal wastes and reuse/recycling.
Work with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies to obtain and maintain permits.
Prepare a variety of regulatory reports which include data collection, calculations, accurate recordkeeping and an adherence to regulatory deadlines.
Establish, write and communicate programs and policies to comply with regulatory programs.
Conduct training and prepare materials for both hourly and salaried personnel.
Support operations in the function and control of the environmental monitoring systems, including the wastewater treatment plant, groundwater monitoring wells and air pollution control devices.
Coordinate Environmental Chemists to conduct daily wastewater treatment rounds and analytical testing of final effluent.
Participate in the on-call duty rotation. Approximately every five weeks, in rotation with other Environmental Department team members, participate in weekend call duty. When on call duty, check air regulatory alarms and CEMS calibrations, check wastewater treatment plant and potable well operating data, provide status reports to Mill duty personnel, and remain on call to respond to emergencies.
What you need to succeed:
Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or Environmental Engineering (or other related engineering or science degree with experience in environmental compliance at a manufacturing facility, or as a consultant. Paper Industry experience elevates applicant’s readiness-level for the role).
5 years of experience with ability/exposure in groundwater sampling
Ability to handle data. Proficient in Excel.
Willing and able to walk and work in an industrial location indoors or outdoors, including walking up and down steps and ladders with all safety equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs, gloves, steel-toed shoes, etc.)

Good oral and written communication skills are required to accurately discuss items with sensitive legal implications and communicate those issues with regulatory personnel.
