Opportunity summary:  The Sr. Safety Leader is responsible for supporting development and administration of the Safety and Health policies, programs, and practices at the Longview Pulp and Paper Mill.  The Safety Leader will function as an advisor to management on technical and regulatory issues and act as a consultant for the line organization to identify hazards, reduce risks, increase efficiency, and ensure a safe working environment.  This role must ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and WestRock requirements

How you will impact WestRock:

  •  Ensure the safety and well-being of all employees and visitors
  •  Act as a safety advisor to management and consultant to the line organization. Work closely with union leadership and all levels of management
  • Lead and manage the development, documentation, training, and implementation of WestRock Safety & Health policies and procedures
  • Prepare training materials and train new and existing employees on a variety of Safety & Health topics, such as: LOTO, confined space entry, fall protection, line breaking, hot work, etc.
  • Coach and work with plant leadership to be a visible role model of incident prevention
  • Analyze safety performance and make recommendations to improve safety practices and performance\
  • Interact with the line organization via daily safety walks. Provide feedback on employee safety concerns
  • Audit the Safety & Health Program and provide feedback to the Safety Manager and other personnel
  • Conduct incident investigations, including root cause analysis. Identify and evaluate conditions and practices in the workplace via safety risk assessments. Provide technical support for on-going problem-solving safety statistics, leading indicators, and tracking mechanisms
  • Perform safety audits and behavior observations of employee and contractor work activities and provide feedback Support the Safety & Health functions
  • Leading, participating, and attending safety committee meetings, toolbox meetings, and outage safety meetings
  • Perform hazardous risk assessments for tasks or jobs to identify potential hazards and develop risk prevention plans to mitigate them
  • Monitor and implement updates in safety regulations and reporting requirements. Revise current policies and procedures to meet and/or exceed regulatory requirements
  • Model and promote an organizational culture that fosters safe practices through effective leadership and training

What you need to succeed:

  •  Demonstrated commitment to safety with the ability to identify safety improvement opportunities
  •  Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (Safety, Environmental, Industrial Hygiene, Fire Protection, Science, or Engineering) or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
  • 3-5 years of progressive health and safety experience
  • Professional safety and health designation (e.g. CSP, CIH) preferred
  • Experience working with government regulators and a thorough knowledge of federal, state & local government HSE regulations (OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, EPA, etc.)
  • Experience implementing Safety Management
  • Ability to influence others to perform their jobs safely and create a culture of safety
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively with others
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolutions skills
  • Strong analytical skills including Root Cause & Risk Analysis methodologies
  • Strong leadership and training skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skill
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize, maintain attention to detail and recognize time constraints
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite software programs.
