The opportunity:

  • Provide leadership to the Secondary Fiber Team.

  • Acquire the 1 to 18 month vision to ensure that objectives are set that meet the goals of the Business.

  • Monitor Key Performance Indicator trends.

  • Oversee the implementation of corrective actions to ensure the machine goals are met.

  • Manage in a goal-oriented systematic environment to deliver target results in the areas of safety, reliability, cost, quality, productivity, and employee engagement.

  • Supply maximum recycle pulp to customers at lowest cost and maximum quality.

  • Hold meaningful 1-1 discussions with members of the Secondary Fiber team.

  • Set expectations and hold both teams and individuals accountable for results.

  • Provide support to the Paper Operational Maintenance Coordinator to ensure operational and maintenance activities are scheduled, coordinated, and executed to drive process and equipment reliability.

  • Actively demonstrate adherence to all mill and departmental policies, to recognize and correct behaviors inconsistent with these policies and to demonstrate a zero tolerance to behaviors inconsistent with these policies.

  • Support the safety initiatives established by the Papermill Supt in pursuit of an accident free work place.

  • Engage hourly personnel involvement in the mill’s safety program.

  • Ensure a consistently high standard of housekeeping within the department is met.

  • Set priorities for maintenance to ensure safety related request and issues are resolved in a timely manner.

  • Drive ownership over safety performance and provide necessary investigations, counter measures and incident communication.  



  • Foster a culture where employees work safely and follow the environmental guidelines.

  • Support the environmental initiatives established by the paper machine supt in the pursuit of 100% environmental compliance.

  • Assist the Process Manager (foreman) to understand all environmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and operating limits to ensure that mill processes operate within compliance and reach accordingly. 



  • Commit to an appropriate and effective set of core values and belief, during all times, that above all respects the efforts of the management team, supports the vision of management roles and thus enhances the collective goals of the entire paper department.

  • Lead the development of documented Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and effective utilization of operating crews to develop SOP’s.

  • Ensure that all operational personnel are held accountable to maintain the standard to the results to which they have a direct contribution.

  • Lead the evaluations of all Secondary Fiber hourly staff on yearly basis to ensure performance individual performances are contributing positively to the department and mill goals.

  • Support the development of process managers (foreman).

  • Assist in the development and executing of the engagement plan for the hourly workforce.

  • Support Task Trainer employee training and certification process. 



  • Involved in the EAM process and meeting metrics. 

  • Assures all work is identified.  Sets work identification expectations of operating crews and actively follows up to maintain engagement.

  • Shares in developing plans (mostly operational).

  • Shares in developing planned work backlog for operational duties.

  • Jointly responsible for keeping the backlog up to date and prioritized with the maintenance planner and supervisor.

  • One of the key people for developing the weekly plan off of the planned work backlog.

  • Shares in developing the schedules for outage, weekly, and daily work.

  • Helps determine whether break-in work is justified.

  • Primary person responsible for determining if contracted labor will be used for operational activities (hydro-blasting, cleaning, and vacuum work).

  • Shares the responsibility in determining whether work is outage or routine.

  • Shares with all employees the responsibility for adherence to the EAM process and its guiding principles.

  • Reviews operator round forms and ensures work order is written and completed with assistance of process managers (foreman).  Follows up with operating crews after the completion of work.

  • Manages area reliability efforts through daily D.A. meetings (basic care, precision maintenance, preventative maintenance, predictive maintenance, etc.).  Understands and tracks all top downtime hitters and aligns maintenance focus. 


  • Support the quality initiatives established by the Paper Machine supt in the pursuit of customer satisfaction.

  • Coordiante and lead the Inbound Quality Evaluation (IQE) process.

  • Review and approve quality specifications and grade recipe (KOP’s) changes. 

  • Manage all inbound quality within tolerance. 

  • Support the use of analytical troubleshooting skills.



  • Ensures that Secondary Fiber performance (Availability, Acceptance, Yield) trends are sustained (or move in the desired direction) at or above.

  • Supports the Paper Foreman in his /her efforts to effectively establish the priorities for the next 72 hours and assist the operating crews (when required) to implement the action plans to address those priorities

  • Acts as the main liaison between secondary fiber operations and external suppliers.

  • Ensure that secondary fiber plans are well communicated and department wide.

  • Monitors operational reliability issues to ensure that issues are resolved as they come up on-shift (if applicable) using the resources available (rather than deferment of issues for the next shift).

  • Actively seeks and supports utilization of benchmarking and best practices tools to enhance the performance of secondary fiber.

  • Supports Paper Foreman in his/her efforts to manage production scheduling (schedule adherence)

  • Leads the secondary fiber system innovation (continuous improvement) process by first seeking lowest cost, and high impact solutions before presenting high (er) cost solutions.

  • Provides area management for capital planning, justification, installation, and startup processes.

  • Leads the development of work systems that will ensure that the process is managed, for the most part, by the paper foremen and operating crews with minimum intervention from Management Team.

  • Supports the Area Superintendents’ in his/her efforts to develop and maintain a 12-month running planned outages schedule based upon the established frequency.

  • Ensure that all secondary fiber SOP’s and TCC’s are documented, are kept up to date and are utilized to ensure consistency of operations.

  • Reports monthly highlights summarizing monthly and YTD machine operations results to the area and operating crews.

  • Maintains an integrated action plan (IAP) for the area.



  • Assist in the maintaining of a list of top chronic or repetitive issue for the department and assign support leader to research and resolve the list.

  • Leads a rigorous adherence to root cause identification and elimination.

  • Ensures audit of action items for completion are being conducted monthly.

  • Ensures a list of top chronic or repetitive issue for the department are maintained and assign a leader to research and resolve the list.



  • Works with the leadership and finance department to set budgets and track data.


Maintain Area 5yr Capital and Repair Plan

  • Work with maintenance department to determine Repair job scopes.

  • Ensure area needs are prioritized and funded for continuous improvement with no loss of production for facilities failures.

  • Review and update the list semiannually.


Liaison with Capital Engineering and Corporate Technology

  • Supports all phases (Business, Technical, Execution, Implementation, and Startup, Operate, & Evaluate as requested)

  • Helps ensure project scope is well defined prior to approval

  • Supports & identifies project savings

  • Helps shepherd projects through the approval process

  • Supports kick-off and other project meetings

  • Develops and update the training document

  • Supports project implementation, checkout and startup as practical

  • Ensures service location & equipment numbers are set up in JDE

  • Ensures identified non-capital spare parts are purchased

  • Supports Potential Problem Analysis for critical projects

  • Participates in critical spare parts are reviewed

  • Adherence to the EM policy and Management of Change documentation.

  • Coordinate and maintain contact with Corporate Technology resources to aid in resolution of chronic failures and other operation related issues. 


What you need to succeed:

  • Good oral and written communications skills, highly skilled in group communication as well as one to one communications.  Ability to determine effective and appropriate means of communication.
  • Fundamental understanding of mill processes affecting Paper Mill Secondary Fiber operations, Engineering degree or equivalent operations experience.
