The Production Maintenance Coordinator (PMC) role provides leadership and support to the Paper Machine Superintendent, Production Supervisors, and operating crews to ensure continuity and reliability of the paper machine operations. The PMC is responsible for the maintenance coordination and actions required to maintaining and ensure operating reliability and improvement; as well as production responsibilities.   The PMC reports to the Paper Machine Superintendent.

How you will impact WestRock:

  • Accountable for an accident free work environment by managing the department safety work order backlog and maintaining a zero-quarterly backlog (within control).

  • Supports mill and department safety initiatives to achieve goal of accident free work environment.  This includes being responsible for timely completion of safety corrective action items.

  • Coordinates and works closely with mill maintenance groups to ensure efficient troubleshooting, planning, and execution of routine repairs are carried out for the stock prep, paper machine, winder, and roll line areas.  

  • Coordinates planning, scheduling, and execution of mill maintenance field days and annual outages for stock prep, paper machine, and winder areas.   Coordinates and ensures proper lockout/tagout (LOTO) are executed in support of these field days and annual outages.
  • Key participant for annual outage planning and coordination.    Ensures the annual outage for area of responsibility is completed on-time and within budget.
  • Responsible for meeting target planned and unplanned maintenance downtime.    Coordinate with equipment reliability and engineering on any projects or issues.   Drive improvement and lessons learned from field days/annual outage critiques.
  • Deliver operational excellence by coordinating activities between Production and Maintenance by leading the EPAM process which includes:  Prioritizing daily work, work order planning, scheduled shutdowns, managing maintenance backlogs, managing break in work for both production and cost optimization, taking the lead in safety, housekeeping audit items, and root cause failure analysis which need both Production and Maintenance follow-up.
  • Support operational troubleshooting of all machine safety, quality, cost and productivity issues as part of the operational team.

  • Keeping “planned work order” backlog according to guidelines; utilize backlog to schedule daily and weekly work list.

  • Regular field review of work requests with planner to insure job is properly scoped and planned prior to execution of work order.

  • Prioritizing and approving break-in or emergency work.

  • Prioritizing and managing work order backlog to include eliminating out of date work order requests.

  • Screening and approving all work orders for asset area; assuring quality of all work orders (coding accuracy, symptoms, accurately described).

  • Serving as project originator for maintenance capital in asset area, including documentation.

  • Being a technical resource for identifying and solving chronic and repeat failures with reliability engineer.

  • Work with maintenance team to develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to support machine uptime and cost control.

  • Planning the installation and startup of new equipment to minimize the upset of normal operations.

  • Work with training resources to maintain detailed, structured on-the-job training manuals for department tasks and jobs.

  • Provide leadership, development, and training to develop shift supervisors and operating crews regarding maintenance work system process.

  • Lead and/or participate on synergy projects; including Lean Six Sigma and capital project implementation.

  • Manage the winder and roll line areas by developing operational and maintenance PM programs.

  • Assist other Department Superintendents in troubleshooting cross departmental issues including utilities (steam, water, air, etc.) and in managing machine scheduled outages.

What you need to succeed:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.  Engineering degree or equivalent of five years operational and/or maintenance experience preferred.

  • Good oral and written communications skills, highly skilled in group level and one on one communication.  Ability to determine effective and appropriate means of communication.

  • Fundamental understanding of mill processes affecting Paper Mill operations,

  • Familiar with statistical process control.

  • Knowledge of maintenance management principles including but not limited to precision maintenance, preventative maintenance, root cause failure analysis, shutdown and contingency planning, and computer-based maintenance work systems; desire to work with maintenance as a team.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with employees throughout the organization, ability to manage change and conflict; influencing others; and good interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to manage timeline process and coordinate multiple tasks.   Working understanding of schedules and computerized maintenance work systems (JDE preferred).  

  • Previous supervisory and paper mill experience is preferred.
