The Opportunity:

The Consumer Mills Controller is a highly visible mill-based role that serves as a key member of the mill’s leadership team, serving as a business advisor as well as liaison with WestRock divisional and corporate management teams. As a member of the mill leadership team, the Controller is expected to be fully engaged in mill productivity and process improvement projects and serve as a champion of the culture.   The Controller oversees the finance and accounting operations of the Mill to ensure adequacy and adherence to control systems, mill level processing, research and analyses, capital planning and analysis, financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting as well as management and development of finance and accounting staff.  The Controller is expected to participate in decision making that includes both financial and operational viewpoints.  Responsibilities include the paper mill as well as the on-site converting operation.

 

How You Will Impact WestRock:

The Controller is a highly visible member of the mill leadership team serving as the finance and accounting lead at the facility and a key liaison with division and corporate teams.

You will be the business partner for the mill leadership team.  Examples of duties involved include:

  • Engaged with mill leadership to improve the processes and profitability of the facility by identifying and analyzing improvement opportunities

  • Strong involvement with capital project analysis, tracking and audits of benefits

  • Developing a financial reporting package that drives continuous improvement

  • Adopting and serving as an advocate for mill cultural initiatives

  • Leading and serving on mill level projects

     

You will be the finance and accounting lead for the facility.  This is a crucial role that provides timely and accurate financial reporting while ensuring adherence to controls:

  • Ensuring compliance with Sarbanes Oxley and WestRock controls and policies, working with internal and external auditors and audit requests

  • Managing the monthly financial closing, meeting all established deadlines.  This includes ensuring proper cut-offs, preparing journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, inventory costing and P&L analyses

  • Preparing accurate forecasts and budgets, while analyzing the data for trends and opportunities to improve performance

  • Reviewing and approving of purchase orders, invoices and other items as needed

  • Performing inventory observations and capital audits; ensuring projects are placed-in-service timely; retirements and transfer are handled as needed. Review physical assets for utilization. Identify any assets that may need depreciation life changes or adjustments

  • Resolving processing exceptions and determining root causes to improve efficiency and effectiveness of centralized processing operations

You will be responsible for training and development of the finance and accounting staff members at the facility

Examples of ad-hoc and continuous improvement projects include:

  • Analysis requests from division, segment or corporate finance and operating team members

  • Serving on software implementation or process improvement teams

  • Continuously seeking improvements in processes

What You Need To Succeed:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting; MBA, CPA or CMA is preferred or Chemical Engineering degree with minimum five years of finance experience and advanced degree

  • Minimum of ten years of experience and a track record of success in finance or accounting.  Manufacturing or process industry experience preferred (Controller function preferred

  • Self-starter and independent thinker with strong technical and financial experience. Ability to work independently, balancing routine responsibilities with ad hoc requests

  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to accuracy and passion for improvement
  • Strong interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a team/collaborative environment and build rapport across functional teams, ability to work remotely with divisional and corporate team members as well as locally in a mill environment
  • Manufacturing experience with a track record of driving sustainable results (e.g. EBITDA growth, margin expansion, cash flow)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to interact credibly and diplomatically with all levels in the organization – tailoring communications effectively for different groups and stakeholders
  • Comfort with ambiguity and constant changes, and ability to handle tight deadlines with calm.
  • Ability to work with mill leadership and operating teams
  • Strong Microsoft skills in Excel; JD Edwards, SAP and Hyperion a plus
