Director of Freight Accounting – Atlanta, GA

The opportunity:

The Director of Freight Accounting, reporting to the VP Accounting Operations, will be responsible for Controllership of over $2 Billion of annual freight spend per year as well as standardizing and centralizing WestRock’s Freight Settlement and Accounting functions.  As the Freight Settlement and Accounting functions currently operate across multiple settlement platforms, the Director of Freight Accounting will be responsible for leading multiple system conversions/consolidations.  The Director of Freight Accounting will lead a Department of ~ 30 associates, consisting of a Freight Audit and Payment team and a Corporate Freight Accounting team.  The role will also interface regularly with Corporate and Divisional Accounting, Financial Compliance, Internal and External Audit, all Logistics Functions, Plant locations, IT, External Vendors and External Carriers. 

How you will impact WestRock:

  • Lead shared service Freight Accounts Payable and Freight Accounting teams responsible for accurately processing invoices, resolving exceptions, recording accruals and platform consolidation related to $2 Billion of annual freight spend 
  • Ensure an effective control environment, collaborating with the Financial Compliance team, Internal and External auditors
  • Develop and execute a strategy to increase shared service coverage and service levels.  Support the establishment of global teams
  • Ensure adherence to financial close deadlines and requirements
  • Create, manage, and develop successful teams within a 30-position department, including both in-house and outsourced roles 
  • Serve on project steering committees for multiple cross functional projects
  • Play key leadership role in numerous system evaluations, upgrades, and conversions in the areas of General Ledger, Purchasing, Transportation and Operational Systems
  • Lead integration activities for acquired businesses
  • Cultivate a culture of continuous improvement, driving automation and productivity Improvements
  • Create and manage budget for department including allocation methodology to allocate costs by Division based on cost to serve
  • Design, implement, and improve monthly reporting, dashboards, accrual methodologies and tools
  • Manage outsourced relationship with 3rd Party responsible for settlement of $300Million of Freight spend; redesign processes and business rules to improve efficiency, reduce errors and improve data quality
  • Meet with key Freight Carriers as needed to review aging issues, identify root cause of issues and resolve

What you need to succeed:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA preferred
  • 15+ years of accounting, accounts payable, or shared service experience
  • Strong analytical and systems skills
  • Demonstrated leadership managing, developing, and inspiring teams
  • Must be able to adjust and work effectively in a dynamic, changing, and collaborative environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively and confidently across all levels of the organization
  • Experience in paper industry or manufacturing environment preferred, but not required
  • Proficiency in OTM, Excel, JD Edwards, SAP (or other financial systems), Hyperion/Essbase/Smartview, and other reporting and analytical systems
  • Experience with Freight preferred, but not required
  • Strong aptitude for process improvement
  • Strong customer service mindset
