Packaging Process Engineer

Position Highlight: Reporting direct to the VP Asset Management, the successful candidate will manage asset projects covering all aspects from equipment identification and development, testing and fault resolution, specification, contracts and purchasing support along with maintenance and sale of used equipment from the group. To actively seek and introduce new process technology to meet site requirements in the print (web & sheet-fed) in the areas of litho, flexo, digital, screen, and packaging conversion finishing areas including cut & crease, and folding along with foiling (both hot & cold) for packaging applications such as cartons, labels, leaflets, rigid boxes, shrink wrap and transaction cards.

The role will involve day to day interaction with other members of the Asset Management Team as well as local level Management Teams and employees together with significant amounts of travel between sites.

How you will impact WestRock:

  •  Identifying new technologies appropriate for site project requirements with contractual document to support performance from machine suppliers
  • Successful identification and targeting of requirements for specific project goals and objectives
  • Implementation procedures and coordinating meetings for installing equipment
  • Improve and sustain the performance of process equipment with any new developments to the market
  • Drive reduction of non-utilised hours and reduce process faults, particularly with new equipment
  • Monitor that SHE safe working practices are maintained
  • In conjunction with the Asset Management Team establish and co-ordinate user groups to generate an open, positive, competitive environment for discussion of new technology and resolution of any issues with OEMs
  • Working in conjunction with other Asset Management people on prepress, print, colour management, cut & crease and finishing projects
  • Project manage new equipment installs interventions to ensure effective use of time and within budgets agreed
  • Generate the contractual purchase documents with OEMs and liaise with Legal Dept on implementation
  • Development where required of a better material / machine process for cost/quality/technical benefits
  • Ensure correct validation and inspections processes are in place with new process equipment
  • In conjunction with the Asset Management team members and site management, assist in specifying, testing and commissioning the equipment being installed
  • Liaise with key machine suppliers on developments and use of future technology designs
  • Successful relocation of assets within the company
  • Liaise with the used machinery dealerships to establish best prices for sale of equipment when requiring disposal and valuation of equipment

What you need to succeed:

  •  At least 5 years of similar experience
  •  Good technical and engineering knowledge of machinery
  •  Experience in implementing and maintenance of best practice across multiple sites
  • Good understanding of printing, and finishing machinery associated with the packaging and converting industries.
  • Project management experience and scheduling
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • SHE awareness – legislative standards/good practice/risk management
  • Experience in using KPI’s/performance measurement/benchmarking
  • Fluent English, other languages are big plus
  • Willing to travel
