Career Opportunity:

The Manager, Energy Demand will design, develop and implement energy demand side reduction programs for reducing the total cost of purchased energy required to operate the business on an enterprise basis.  Engage the business units to successfully drive initiatives to maximize energy efficiencies where ever energy is consumed, optimize input costs across the supplier base to ensure we are using the most cost-effective energy source and establish and drive standard processes to continuously identify and capture energy savings to sustain gains throughout the business.  Position contributes to managing an annual external energy spend of $750MM.


Conceive, design, develop and implement programs to reduce utility costs by improving the energy efficiency of all business units.   Recruit and motivate key personnel at WestRock manufacturing facilities to participate and champion the energy reductions programs.  Develop and implement Strategies for optimizing Power House operations at the integrated Mills.  Develop and recommend Best Practices for infrastructure equipment installation and operation for energy consumption reductions while maintaining or enhancing service and reliability.  Develop and implement strategies regarding alternative fuels to reduce overall costs.  Recommend improvements to operations to improve efficiencies for reduced usage.  Provide a central point of support for Corporate-wide activities to reduce energy consumption.  Serve as a liaison between energy procurement activities at home office, and energy usage reduction activities at the manufacturing locations.


How you will impact WestRock:

  • Analyze systems for opportunities to generate efficiency gains (decrease utilization, fuel switching, right sizing).

  • Create and maintain a listing of energy savings ideas.

  • Rank and prioritize savings ideas based on potential savings verse capital requirements, time to capture.

  • Recommend improvements to operating systems to maximize energy efficiencies.

  • Establish and drive standard processes across the business units to reduce energy costs and sustain prior gains

  • Serve as Energy Management Group’s subject matter expert with Corporate and Division Engineering.

  • Work through Lean Six Sigma and Operational Excellence to implement Energy Best practices.

  • Create energy Dashboards to record, measure and document improvements.  Include critical operational metrics.  Report variances and suggested corrective actions.

  • Be a champion for energy demand side reduction.  Create a structure sponsored by management committed to the permanent reduction in energy costs over time.  Include key stakeholders from manufacturing, operations, engineering and environmental to build consensus for the program and separate initiatives. 

  • Provide primary point of contact for business units concerning Energy Efficiency and Energy Best Practices.  

  • Participate in Energy related audits.

  • Address new or closing plant issues as related to effective use of energy. 

  • Recommend improvements to infrastructure equipment such as Air Compressors, Boilers, Chillers, Lighting systems for consumption reductions.

  • Assist with utility project development and implementation such as power factor issues and Alternative Fuel Source projects.

  • Other tasks as assigned by the Director, Energy Supply Management.

What you need to succeed:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required, Engineering or technical degree preferred.

  • Minimum 5 years of energy related professional experience preferred.

  • Experience in the Pulp and Paper industry.

  • Proven ability to manage people and lead projects to a successful completion.

  • Strong analytical skills.  Ability to secure relevant information from a fact base, identify key issues and relationships and drive what’s learned to achieve high impact results.

  • Effectively work with individuals and groups outside the formal line of authority, taking actions that respects the needs and contributions of others, yet accomplishes key goals and results.

  • Knowledge of how energy is purchased and consumed in a paper converting and manufacturing business.

  • Knowledge of energy efficient technologies for manufacturing infrastructure.

  • Be a self-starter. Proactive to achieve goals beyond what is required.  

  • Make timely and critical decisions based on facts.  Initiate actions that achieve a recognized benefit or competitive advantage for the business.

  • Ability to form strategic plans and execute through direct and indirect resources

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Ability to express ideas effectively in individual and group situations targeting communications to the needs of the audience and to get positive results.
