IT  Manager - Database Engineering - Duluth, GA

The opportunity:

  • As Manager of Database Engineering you will be responsible for planning, organization, monitoring and measuring the work assignments and accomplishments of the Database Administration team.
  • You will be responsible for establishing goals for the Database team and work with other IT groups as necessary. 
  • You will work with upper IT managers on longer term planning for database and data management technologies.
  • You will be engaged in various database engineering projects, including migrating database systems to the Cloud as well as building new data solutions in the Cloud.

How you will impact WestRock

  • You will be the functional manager for a team of 5 database administrators and architects in the Data Engineering Center of Excellence.
  • You will be responsible for managing and supporting Oracle databases on AIX UNIX and Windows platforms, as well as MySQL databases on Linux.  Our environment consists of 90 Oracle Servers (211 databases) and 32 MySQL instances.
  • You will be part of Westrock’s digital transformation journey as you will design and make recommendations for modern database architecture on premise and in the Cloud.
  • You will be involved in large initiatives to migrate existing on-prem data to the cloud, integrate new data sources and standardize across data platforms.
  • You will exercise strong communication skills to lead a diverse team of database administrators in US and Poland.
  • You will handle annual performance reviews and goal setting activities for members of your team.
  • You will provide excellent technical leadership/mentorship to your team and peers.
  • You will follow Agile methodologies and participate in Scrum activities with the team.
  • You will handle all SOX and compliance related activities including security audits, data protection efforts and all audit requests.
  • You will identify and implement process improvements where needed.

What you need to succeed:

  • BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related subject or related experience.
  • Experience managing and mentoring others in the technical space.
  • Expert level technical knowledge in multiple relational databases.
  • Recent experience migrating data and building new data solutions in AWS.
  • Knowledge of Cloud Formation deployment templates in AWS.
  • Experience with in-memory, NoSQL and relational cloud data store technologies.
  • 10+ years of experience with relational databases (Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL).
  • 10+ years of experience with UNIX and Linux operating systems.
  • Experience migrating Oracle databases to open source platforms like MySQL, MariaDB or PostgreSQL.
  • Strong performance troubleshooting skills and root cause analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with scripting languages: korn shell, bash shell, Python.
  • Experience with Amazon cloud services, including Redshift, IAM, S3, RDS, EMR.
  • Data warehousing and bid data technologies is a big plus.
  • 5+ years of experience leading project efforts.
  • 5+ years of experience collaborating with multiple IT teams.
  • Experience leading Agile/Scrum teams preferred.
