The Battle Creek location is seeking a Human Resources and Safety Generalist supports employees and company management in the processes of hiring, onboarding, orientation, performance management, employee and labor relations, health and wellness, safety program oversight, compliance and processes.  The Human Resources and Safety Generalist will work closely with the Human Resources Manager, the Safety Manager and other Mill Employees to achieve the goals of the facility.

  • Works to foster a safety-conscious culture in the workplace to reduce incidents and injuries.
  • Works to promote facility and health systems, assure regulatory compliance and make safe behaviors part of day-to-day thinking.
  • Develop working knowledge in the application of Federal and State Laws including EEO, FMLA, HIPAA, ADA, and Collective Bargaining.
  • Support processes to meet staffing needs of the organization.  This includes the sourcing, selection, testing, and hiring of employees as well as conducting new employee orientation.
  • Assist in the continuous improvement of employee competency of the organization.  This includes developing skills in coaching, influencing and facilitating.
  • Hands on approach for cultural change initiatives to develop teams of engaged employees. 
  • Gains working knowledge of labor relations activities including contract interpretation and grievance administration.  Develops proficiency in handling complaints, settling and resolving disputes, administering grievances, and conducting internal investigations.
  • Understands all administrative aspects of the human resources function including maintaining records and confidential employee files, employee pay and regulatory reporting.
  • Conducts periodic training on applicable topics including sexual harassment, diversity, employment law and WestRock Culture initiatives.



What you need to succeed

  • A bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of Human Resources experience manufacturing environment.

  • Safety experience a plus.

  • Requires basic knowledge of Human Resource law, and appropriate procedures in all areas of Human Resources.

  • Requires basic knowledge of workplace safety procedures and OSHA compliance.

  • Requires the ability to use analytical skills to conduct and investigate complaints, and disciplinary activities.

  • Demonstrates proficiency with interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal).

  • Ability to address employee conflicts objectively and work with management to solve issues.

  • Able to effectively communicate at all levels of the organization.

  • Ability to practice and maintain strict confidentially

  • Effective at multi-tasking and managing multiple priorities

  • Team building and influencing skills

  • Possess a sense of urgency and self-motivation

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to complete assignments in timely manner.

  • Proficient in computer software applications.
