Senior Benefits Accounting Manager- Atlanta, GA
The Senior Benefits Accounting Manager will manage a team of 5 comprised of two managers, one senior and a staff and report directly to the Director of Home Office Accounting but also provide support as requested directly to the VP & Corporate Controller and the CAO. This person will be responsible for being a hands-on leader of a high-performing, dynamic benefits accounting team, oversee all aspects of benefits accounting including accounting for payroll, pension, post employment, group insurance and share based compensation. The Senior Benefits Accounting Manager position will have a high capacity for staff development and training and will work in a fast paced environment and requires excellent communication skills and ability to work with a broad number of people and different levels in the organization. How you will impact WestRock:
Oversee the accounting for pension, postretirement plans, share based compensation, payroll accounting, group insurance and workers compensation under U.S. GAAP, including overseeing the month/quarter end close process for WestRock including reviewing journal entries, account reconciliations, reporting schedules, and related 10Q-/10-K footnotes (prepare all items if needed)
Oversee the annual external audit process of corporate benefit plans by reviewing (preparing in some cases) trial balance, schedules, financial statements, compliance documents, and management reporting
Oversee the Day-to-day accounting of the company’s equity compensation plans, including stock option exercises and RSU releases
Maintain relationship with third-party actuaries, treasury department and benefits department to properly account for benefit plan assets and liabilities
Manage the team that oversees the accounting for payroll related activities including union dues reporting, accounting for payroll taxes, review of state, federal and other withholding accounts, and reconciliation of W-2 reporting.
Work with the benefits group to analyze and assess the adequacy of various benefits reserves such as LTD/STD reserve, group insurance, retiree medical, HSA, and FSA.
Support the annual budgeting process for employee benefits, retirement plans, pension income/ expense, post retirement expense, share based compensation expense and related administration expenses.
Prepare ad hoc management reports, financial analyses and presentations upon request.
Coordinate with third party administrator and/or transfer agents
Responsible for continuous improvement and automation of processes across the company to help ensure timely and accurate reporting of results. In this regard he/she must be able to identify and interpret current needs and inefficiencies and to develop solutions and influence other management in the use of new processes or resources.
Responsible for ensuring all SOX requirements for her/his function and role are met: including journal entry review and balance sheet account reconciliations.
Manage and mentor staff
What you need to succeed:
A minimum of 10+ years of relevant experience.
Strong understanding of US GAAP
In-depth knowledge of accounting for pension, postretirement plans and share based compensation accounting under U.S. GAAP, including IFRS and local GAAP conversions
JDE financial accounting experience a plus
Strongly prefer Essbase and Hyperion experience
Strong analytical skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Customer-oriented with strong ability for trouble-shooting and issue resolution
Ability to manage and prioritize various responsibilities under pressure with competing/ short deadlines
Ability to work independently with internal business partners and outside vendors
Ability to assess current processes and implement process improvements as required
Strong system skills including advanced Excel.
Strong problem-solving skills, passion for improvement, and enjoy working in a team/collaborative environment. Ability to simultaneously manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities under tight deadlines
Bachelors Degree in Accounting, with 10+ years of related professional experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. CPA required.
